After having occupied himself above all with Gaspard de la nuit for some two decades, Stefan Vladar now for the first time appears as a Ravel interpreter on CD. One immediately notices that this recording is not a rush job: how Vladar generates the balance between the various voices, how he forms transitions, employs the pedal, spreads out chords, and renders swift passages with clarity and verve – this entire list attests to thoroughness and high pianistic capabilities. Vladar’s dramaturgical intelligence is compelling, also in the Sonatine and the four individual
pieces. His brilliance is not an end in itself but goes along with great refinement.
